I was sorry to be so vague; my vagueness only stems from my ignorance...
When my UNIX-friend fully explains the problem/solution to me, I will be
sure to post his comments here.

I do know that the "pump" suggestion didn't actually end up working for
us.  And I do know that we ended up, as I say, copying the IP address
from my other computer onto this new computer, just to momentarily get
hooked up to the Internet.  From there, like I say, my friend took over,
doing some stuff "remotely" from his computer, to mine.
That "sshd" function was a savior--- although I'm sure we all have to be
careful about that.
I'll post more info when I get it---
