i forget expanding the tarball
cd /usr/src
rm linux ( symbolic link )
tar -zxvf linuxtarball
mv linux linux-2.4.x
ln -s linux-2.4.x linux
cd linux

Make install also makes a backup of last kernel installed. It isn't always painless ( reiserfs was broken a few kernels back ) but it feels good to be on the latest kernel.
