I've been using various iterations of 2.4 since it came out with no
problems.  I run a mixture of debian, progeny and lfs systems.

Each distro has it's way of dealing with upgrading kernels but across
the board if you check the linux/Documentation/Changes file it will tell 
you what packages need to be upgraded in order to run the flavor of kernel 
you have source for.  You can have more than one kernel installed on
your system and choose between them at boot so your risk of trying
2.4.10 is minimized.
