The short answer is absolutely yes, as I am sure you are aware, UNIX is a
true multi user system, not just a kernel hack. Utilizing standards such as
XDMCP you can utilize GUI applications that run on the server, not on the
client desktop. You can do allot of interesting things with diskless clients
and an Xserver ( diskless == without harddisk ) The possibilities are
unlimited, and all it takes it time and effort to get a full featured
client/server NOS with freeNIX such as Linux. As far as your particular
application, it truly depends on what its needs are, if you are looking for
a replacement of an existing system, you have really asked in the right
place as there are quite a few "guru's" here that are more than happy to
answer any questions you may have. so ask away!


P.S. let me be the first to rebut myself, there are allot of different ways
to configure such a multi-user system, and it just depends on the needs and
the existing hardware/network etc.. as to the way you would engineer such a
beast.
