My take on it: they're trying to do too damn much at one time.

They're trying to introduce FreeBSD on 3 architectures it had never run
on before (PowerPC, UltraSPARC, Itanium) and at least two major kernel
architecture changes.

PowerPC support going from non-existent to full-fledged production-ready
code in under 2 years? C'mon, guys. It takes a hell of a lot longer
than that to reconcile all the architecture-specific bits in the core
kernel, especially when the core kernel has *so* many
architecture-specific optimizations from when FreeBSD was only on 32-bit
Intel.

And no, I'm not a *BSD bigot, although I have been known to use FreeBSD
& NetBSD.

Oh, goodie! A flame war! Good thing I remembered my asbestos
underpants :)
