Thanks for your message the info was very helpfull.  AFTER I cut the
grass and had dinner I checked and here is what I found.
The kernal is 2.2.16-22
I could not find isapnp.conf so I created one and ran isapnp against it
and it said irq 5 was conflicting so changed it to 9 as thats what card
was on in W98 and re ran with isapnp and no errors.  I ran modprobe
sound and pop there were the speakers and I put in a audio cd and it
worked too.  I will try now to reboot and see if it stays or if I have
to do anything to make it permanent.  Thanks again .  Now that leaves me
with my 56k modem and the flat bed scanner (off the paraallel port)  and
I will be at the same point I am with 98.  Frustating yes but seem to be
learning a bunch.
