Having a limited range of experience with DVDs, Xine is the best I
found for older hardware. Not sure if your's qualifies as that, but my
dual PII-350 and Matrox G200 sure did :) You might try ogle
(http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~dvd/) or VideoLAN::Client
(http://www.videolan.org/) as well as oms
(http://www.linuxvideo.org/oms/).

I'm not sure if mplayer handles DVD (haven't tried) but it works great
for watch avi and mpg files on my old machine.
