[olug] Raid and or Journaling

I've been using software raid with 2.2 and 2.4 kernels and love it. I've
used Raid-1 (software) for some critical systems such as primary DNS server,
and had no problems. I also haven't had a drive failure yet, so I can't say
how well software raid-1 handles it.

Funny but true Linux Software Raid story: I made some estimates for how
long it would take a customer to move a large amount of data onto their
system. I made my estimates based on a quite similar system that I had
handy to test with. The chief difference between the two systems was that
the customer systems had 130GB of disk space spread over 5 Ultra-160 SCSI
drives connected to a DPT hardware raid controller. My test system had had
160 GB of disk space apread over 2 Maxtor IDE drives and 2.2 kernel software
raid-0. My estimates proved quite wrong for the customer because my
Maxtor-IDE/software-raid system had 20% faster I/O than the
160-SCSI/hardware-RAID solution . . .

I've been using s/w raid (raid5) at work in very intense production systems
for nearly two years without any trouble, even after a disk failure. We
have one application called "drivewidower", due to it's ability to trash a
good scsi drive every 6 months and it is now writing to a s/w raid without
any problems.
We also use reiserfs, to an extent, on s/w raid without any trouble at all.
I've been testing Ext3 to see if there's any advantages to switching to it
in the near future. I haven't had any trouble with it either, but I'm not
sure if it would help in the environments where we're currently using ext2.
