[olug] patching kernel

How in the heck to I patch a file?

I downloaded the 2.4.12 kernel yesterday.  I untarred and unzipped it
into it's own pretty directory.  I then downloaded the patch for .13
today.  Where do I go from here?

Do I need to gunzip the patch?  Which command do I use 'patch'? Patch
looks like it only works on individual files.
