[olug] Network Name registration.

Don't exclusively look at bind. Search freshmeat.net for some other
programs that do the same thing. I use tinydns from the djbdns
packages available at http://cr.yp.to (I love that domain name).

Here is my chronology of the events I did to register and serve up
http://thepennes.net and http://zoucha.net

First I set up tinydns with my domain names and IPs on the first PC
with IP 168.40.88.38. I also did this on another PC at 168.40.88.36.

Then I registered my names with network solutions. When registering
the names, I entered the 2 DNS servers with the information. Withing
48 hours it all worked.

I can't do reverse lookup though because my IPs are handled by Alltel's
DNS servers.

>From what I can tell when the program queries an name, it starts with
.net .com or .org and asks the approriate root servers of .net or .com
or .org for the address. The root servers look at the second part, in
my case thepennes or zoucha and tell the program to query a different
(non-root) server that you entered for your domain name registration.
In my case it sends thepennes.net queries to 168.40.88.38 or .36 and
asks for the IP of that domain name. My local server looks at the
third part of the name (www. dns1. or webserver.) and then sends back
the appropriate IP address. That way www. can have a different IP than
dns1. This is the way I understand it and so far it works. I don't
know anything about AXFR or CNAME.
