The kernel gets compiled the same way regardless of whether you use GRUB
or LILO.

GRUB and LILO are the boot loaders, they're used when the computer
starts to load up the kernel (The kernel doesn't care which one you
use).  For more information on GRUB, check out the GRUB home page,
