no, it runs over the ssh session, no other ports are needed, If you can ssh
DIRECTLY** into a machine, you can run X over the link.
ssh to your home "gateway" and issue the command `echo $DISPLAY` is should
be something like localhost:S.0

** you have to go directly to the box, not via multiple sessions as you are
trying to do it, other option's for your setup would be something like
ssh'ing into you ssh server, export your display, and run vncviewer to
connect to your "desktop" machine, OR open a port on the
firewall/router/whatever directly to your desktop machine, any port, and run
an ssh server on that port so you can ssh into your desktop directly.

It is possible, I do it all the time.
