sounds like pine thinks you're running an smtp server (like sendmail, exim,
etc) on your local computer. most default linux installs call the computer
it's self localhost.localdomain. check out /etc/hosts and see what
localhost.localdomain points to.

pine should have an option in the prefs to use an smtp server (i think so
anyway), dig around for it and try changing it to your isp's smtp server.
