Well I have spent some time researching distributions and I can't find a good answer to this.  I would recomend that you try a different distribution.  This group prefers debian but i have never installed it.  I use Slackware and have had great success with it.  Personally I don't care for Mandrake.  Mandrake makes too many assumptions for me.
